TAXIDERMY

Music video for song ‘TAXIDERMY’ from the album 'the show'

The song TAXIDERMY is a haunting, piano-driven ballad that explores the fragility of human connection and identity. Its intimate sound contrasts with the bold themes of emotional preservation and external expectations. The track’s raw vulnerability and poetic lyricism leave listeners reflecting on the emotional toll of living up to others’ expectations and the loss of one’s true self. It’s a song that, whenever performed live, hits the audience the hardest out of any other song on the album, and it’s a song that’s very much inspired by the way I sometimes feel as a performer.

The inspiration of the video came straight from the title; I wanted to evoke this practice of taxidermy in some way, and I knew I wanted it to be strange. We came up with this idea to show the imaginary process of taxidermizing a stuffed teddy bear - we chose a teddy bear because of its associated innocence and juvenile nature, and the contrast it would have to involve it in such a brutish process!

I applied colour grade in black and white in post to give it a gritty and dark feel in contrast with the silly nature of what’s going on, while also in-keeping with the melancholic vibe of the song. To add to that, it’s edited in a way that genuinely translates to the practice of taxidermy – It’s a real tutorial if you actually want to do that! However the idea behind the video is that you wouldn’t necessarily want to do that, even through the whimsy of it being done on a teddy bear.
